How to Choose an App Development Company in Ireland

A practical checklist for finding and hiring app developers in Ireland, from first shortlist to signed contract.

Choose an app development company in Ireland on evidence, not on lists: ask to see apps like yours that are live and still supported, meet the people who will build it, and get code ownership in writing. ERS IT Solutions has been trading since 1983 from Blanchardstown, Dublin 15, with 25+ in-house developers, and this is the checklist we would use ourselves.

How do you find mobile app developers in Ireland?

Start from the problem, not the search results. Write one page on who will use the app, what they need to do, which systems it must connect to and whether it must work without signal. Then shortlist three companies or freelancers whose published work includes something close. Referrals from businesses in your sector beat any directory.

Are "top 10 mobile app development companies" lists worth using?

Treat them as a starting point only. Before trusting a "best app developers in Ireland" or "top app development company" list, check how it was compiled (paid listing, reviews, editorial) and whether each firm on it has a team in Ireland. What matters is whether a company has built and supported an app like yours, which no ranking tells you.

What does a software development company actually do?

A software or app development company takes you from idea to a working, supported product: business analysis, design, development, testing, App Store submission, hosting and support. A freelancer usually covers the coding. Many software companies lead with business development staff; ask to speak with the engineer or analyst who will scope your project, because that conversation tells you more than the sales pitch.

How to hire mobile app developers: the questions to ask

  1. Show us an app like ours that is live today. Ask who supports it now.
  2. Who will actually build it, and where are they based? ERS's engineering team is based in Ireland.
  3. How do you handle offline working, security and personal data?
  4. What does your quote include? Design, testing, App Store submission, hosting, warranty, support.
  5. Who owns the source code? The answer should be "you", in writing.
  6. What happens after launch? Yearly Apple and Google updates, bug fixes and new features.
  7. Can you take over an app someone else built? This tests how well a company reads other people's code. ERS took over JFC's portal and iOS and Android apps from a previous vendor without disrupting live customers.

How many developers do you need to make an app?

More roles than people expect, though not all full time. A typical business app needs a mobile developer per platform (or one cross-platform developer), a back-end developer, a business analyst or designer, a tester and a project manager. ERS's own guidance is that even a simple app may need a team of four to five, depending on features. A lone developer can build a small app, but you then rely on one person for design, testing and support.

Freelance app developers in Ireland can be a good fit for a small, well-defined app when you can manage the project yourself. For anything business-critical, a team matters more than a rate. Dublin contractor day rates are set out in our app development cost guide.

How do you partner with app developers without losing control?

Agree a written scope for the first release, short build cycles with demos every week or two, and access to the code repository from day one. A good partner will tell you what to leave out. ERS works in iterative sprints with regular demos, and you can see progress as it happens.

If you already have developers and need extra hands, project resourcing puts ERS engineers inside your own team and process.

What should a mobile app development plan include?

  • The users and the two or three jobs the app must do well.
  • Platforms: iPhone, Android, tablet, web (see native vs cross-platform).
  • Systems the app connects to, and who owns each one.
  • Data protection: what personal data you collect and where it is stored.
  • A first release (MVP) and a list of what comes later.
  • Budget for running costs and yearly updates, not just the build.
  • Success measures: hours saved, orders taken, errors removed.

What should the contract say?

At minimum: scope and acceptance tests, payment stages, warranty, support terms and code ownership. Under Irish copyright law the author of a work owns it unless it was made by an employee (Copyright and Related Rights Act 2000, section 23), and an assignment of copyright is not effective unless in writing and signed (section 120).

If the developer will handle personal data for you, GDPR requires that processing by a processor be governed by a contract (Article 28(3), EUR-Lex). With ERS, the application and its source code are your organisation's IP under our standard engagement terms. Have your solicitor review any contract template before you sign.

Common questions

Who are the best app developers in Ireland?

The best company for you is one that has built and still supports an app close to yours, in your sector. Ask each shortlisted firm for two live examples and a reference you can call. ERS's published work includes apps for vets, nursing homes, trade unions, farm equipment and the National Lottery retailer network, all listed on our case studies page.

How long does it take to hire an app development company?

Allow a few weeks: a week to write the one-page brief, a week or two for calls and proposals, and time to check references and agree the contract. A company that can start tomorrow without asking questions is a warning sign, not a bargain.

Should I hire developers for an app or outsource the whole project?

Hire if the app is your core product and you will keep developing it for years. Outsource if you need one app built and supported, because a team brings design, testing and cover you would otherwise have to recruit. Many businesses start outsourced and bring work in-house later; insist on documentation so that move is possible.

Is it safe to use an offshore app developer?

It can work, but check where your data will sit, which country's law governs the contract and how you will enforce it, and whether meetings fit your working day. For apps handling personal data of Irish customers, a GDPR processor agreement is a legal requirement, not an extra.
